Welcome to episode three of the Feldencast. This one's called the Elbow Wheel. It's my version of AY3, which is traditionally called Rolling to Sit with the Elbows.
This lesson requires quite a bit of floor space, if you want to do it in a comfortable way. You don’t want to be worried about running into stuff, so find yourself a nice, open space, like a big stretch of floor.
When my girlfriend did it, she didn't maintain the orientation of the room. She kept moving around in circles and stuff, which she really enjoyed! So, give yourself some room. It's really fun to not feel hemmed in.
I put this lesson next in the sequence after that first breathing lesson because it's a good introduction to the idea of a function. Breathing is a function that’s always there, either in the background or in the foreground. But this lesson looks at a transitional function.
How do you go from lying on your back to sitting up? And then, how do you go from sitting one way to sitting another way? It’s not hard to imagine the practical application of this lesson. Maybe next time you’re lying down and you need to sit up, you’ll think, “oh, yeah I practiced for just this occasion.”
As with all treatments of functions in the Feldenkrais method, it's not that this is the correct way to sit up. It's just a somewhat systematic exploration of one way that may come in handy.
So if you've got some space and you're ready, then here it is, episode number three, the elbow wheel.
