I grew up skateboarding in the late 90s, early 2000s, and in skateboarding there are lots of crazy names for tricks.
Japan Air.
Method grab.
Stalefish.
Lazer Flip.
One type of trick is a plant.
You can do a hand plant or a foot plant.
Basically, you plant some part of you on the ground, then you do a trick from there.
So I called this lesson elbow plants.
There’s a connection between this lesson and a previous lesson about an the elbow wheel. This one was originally titled “Bending the Head to the Side When Sitting,” which is a fair description of the reference movement at the beginning and end. But everything in the middle of the lesson reminds me of movements from AY3, rolling to sit with the elbows. So I emphasized the elbows in the title and how I presented the lesson.
I heard Feldenkrais didn't really order the lessons in the AY sequence or give them titles, so I don't feel bad about coming up with my own titles and my own sequence, but it does surprise me that this is the first in the AY sequence. There are interesting, strange movements in this lesson that don’t seem introductory at all. So it makes sense to put it here in the middle of season one, after some other movements that are easier to start with.
If you're a purist and you're starting here with AY1, tally ho!
If you’re following along with my sequence, i think you're adequately prepared.
In either case, please enjoy the elbow plants.
