Welcome to episode five of the Feldencast, Heads Will Roll. The last episode had a Shakespeare-influenced title. This one's more French Revolution.
No, I just have fun with the titles. I have to change them. This one's based on AY8, which was titled Rolling the Head Between the Hands, which is apt. There will be plenty of rolling the head between the hands, but Heads Will Roll is just fun. I don't know.
This is a cool lesson in that it uses a strategy Feldenkrais used often to great effect, where you do one movement in many different orientations to gravity and in various configurations of the different members of your body.
Since we're still kind of close to the beginning of the podcast, I'll wax philosophical for a moment to note that we're looking at a function again. What is a function? That's a question I raised in an earlier episode. And in this context, the function is rolling the head. Note that it's not turning the head.
You might think about the difference between rolling the head and turning the head. See if you can make sense of that in the course of this lesson. The function of rolling the head is what you're gonna do in a lot of different contexts.
We had a lesson that was about a transitional function that involved the whole body coming from lying down to sitting up, and now we have a different function.
How robust is this function?
In how many situations does it stay functional?
When/why/how does it stop functioning?
That's just some food for thought. I hope you enjoy this episode. Heads will roll.
